Matjhabeng - meaning "where nations meet" - represents a powerful legacy forged by the melting pot of migrant labour that built the Free State Goldfields.

Our History
After World War II, the discovery of gold brought rapid development - roads, rail, housing, and infrastructure transformed our region into a bustling mining hub. At its peak, Matjhabeng contributed nearly 57% of the Free State's economy.
But that golden age did not last. Since the 1980s, mining employment has collapsed—from about 180,000 jobs down to just 30,000 by the early 2010s. Over the last three decades, our economy shrank by roughly 35%, and nearly 160,000 livelihoods were lost.
The Challenges We Face
Corruption & Mismanagement
Public funds were misused, accountability fell away, and the municipality was placed under administration.
Infrastructure Decay
Crime, illegal mining, cable theft, and infrastructure sabotage have steadily eroded public trust and service delivery.
Water Crisis
A basic need that has become a daily struggle, hurting both families and businesses.
Our Vision
We stand ready to maximise collaborations in order to bring restoration to our beautiful city in more ways than one.
